On April 28th, MC Companies is participating in a walk dedicated to funding the future of cystic fibrosis research. The walk will be happening at Reid Park in Tucson, so if you live in any of our Phoenix properties and want to make the trip, this is the perfect way to get involved in your community and make a difference. What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is a progressive disease that causes persistent lung infections that, over time, limits the ability to breathe. This genetic disease causes a thick, sticky buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. Sometimes, like in the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria which leads to infections, lung damage and eventually respiratory failure. Other times, like in the pancreas, the mucus doesn’t let the digestive enzymes to release so, the body can’t break down food and absorb nutrients.
Who’s Affected by CF?
According to the CF Foundation, here are the facts:
- More than 30,000 people are living with cystic fibrosis (more than 70,000 worldwide).
- Approximately 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year.
- More than 75 percent of people with CF are diagnosed by age 2.
- More than half of the CF population is age 18 or older.
What is the CF Foundation?
The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to “cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment, and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care.”
The foundation provides both research and drugs for those living with CF. This is made possible by their largest national fundraising event called Great Strides.
What is Great Strides?
Great Strides is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event with walks in nearly 500 cities nationwide welcoming more than 125,000 striders to support our mission to cure CF. The mission? To cure cystic fibrosis and raise awareness for this rare, but life-shortening disease that makes it difficult to breathe.
So on April 28th, MC Companies will be lacing up their sneakers in order to walk for this cause. We’ve supported it every year and would love for you to join us this year! Nearly every CF drug was made possible by the Foundation and because of funds raised from Great Strides, people with CF are living longer, healthier lives and pursuing their dreams. CF works every day to build on the incredible momentum, and they won’t stop until there is a cure for all people living with CF.
