1 in 68 children in the US have autism. Not to scare you, but that’s a pretty high number. Over 3 million people in the US alone are affected by autism spectrum disorders and tens of millions are affected worldwide. So why am I telling you this? Because you can help make a positive impact on all those affected by autism just by taking a few steps.
Autism Speaks has partnered with Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) to start the Autism Speaks Walk. The walk is an event that raises money and awareness for autism. This walk is one small step in changing the future for those who are affected and struggle with autism. Everyone is touched by autism in one small way; whether it is with a family member or a co-worker’s family member. The Autism Speaks Walk is just one way to make a positive difference.
Last year’s walk raised over a million dollars, which is incredible. This year, with your help, we hope top that and raise even more money.
You still have time to register your team to walk on October 23 with other advocates for autism along with families affected by autism. So gather all of your friends and family, come up with a fantastic team name and then register by visiting Walk for Autism’s website: http://www.autismspeakswalk.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=1155041
Even if you can’t walk, you can always donate to your favorite team! Any little bit helps make a positive difference. Help us raise public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families and society.
